In one day, you can experience the evolution of Chinese and Buddhist history – from the ancient imperial capital to the craftsmanship wonders of the grottoes, to the amazing renewal power of Shaolin architecture and energy.
Travel Itinerary
You will start your day tour in Luoyang by picking you up from your hotel (our guide will contact you in advance to confirm the pick-up time) or the train station upon your arrival (arrival before 9:00 AM is recommended).
On the way to Longmen Grottoes, your guide will share with you the 13 dynasties history of the ancient capital of Luoyang and the background of the grottoes. An electric car will take you from the arrival point to the majestic entrance of the sightseeing area. It is amazing to see the number and artistry of the Buddha statues, scattered in thousands of caves large and small, covering a vast area. The smallest Buddha statue is smaller than a finger, and the largest is ten times the size of a human. Listen to your guide tell the stories behind the development, destruction and protection of the grottoes.
Walk to the bridge over the Yi River, where you can see a panoramic view of the entire grottoes. Alternatively, take a boat on the river to enjoy a farther view (own expense). Afterwards, take an electric car to the parking lot to continue your tour.
Lunch is at your own discretion. Your guide will be happy to recommend you authentic local cuisine.
An hour’s drive will take you to Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of legendary Chinese Kung Fu and Zen Buddhism. Passing through the white gate with an inscription by Emperor Kangxi, you can admire the temple’s many halls and their interior decorations. Equally stunning is the vast forest of pagodas – tombs commemorating generations of respected monks. A trip to Shaolin Temple would not be complete without a thrilling Kung Fu show. Legend has it that Kung Fu originated in the temple as a form of exercise for monks.
Note: Your guide will adjust the order of your visit to ensure that you do not miss the performances at Shaolin Temple, which are scheduled five times a day. Each performance is about half an hour and includes interaction with tourists.
Your day trip ends when you are dropped off at your hotel or train station to your next destination, which is recommended to depart after 19:30.

- The tour guide may adjust the itinerary due to closure of the museums each Monday.
- At the conclusion of the tour, a transfer from your hotel to Hongqiao or Pudong Airport in Shanghai is available upon request at a surcharge.
